Syngonium

Syngonium

The Syngonium is a real climbing plant. Originally the plants come from the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica. The plant is related to the Araceae, just like the Alocasia, Dieffenbachia and Anthurium. You recognize the plant by its nice leaf shape including unique leaf markings. Despite the fact that in most cases the plant is very small, it is a real winner in purifying the air.

How do you take care of a Syngonium?

The best location

The Syngonium prefers to stand on a pitch with not too bright sunshine. Indirect sunlight and in some cases even half shade is fine for the Syngonium. Do not place the plant on a windowsill with too much direct sunlight. The leaf of the plant will burn, and that is of course a great shame.

Watering the Syngonium

The Syngonium expects you to stop by once a week with the watering can. Its roots are in the tropical rainforests, so the plant is accustomed to high humidity. Especially in summer enough watering is important. Always keep the soil slightly moist, but beware of excess water. If there is too much water, the roots of the Syngonium will not be able to absorb it. The plant will then suffer from root rot and eventually die. Of course you want to prevent that!

Plant nutrition

The Syngonium likes a little extra nutrition. From spring until the end of summer you can provide the plant with a shot of plant nutrition once every two weeks. For the Syngonium you can just use Universal plant nutrition. Look on the packaging for the right amount. Are you in doubt? Always give less plant nutrition than too much. Too much plant food can be harmful to the Syngonium.

Repotting

Repotting the Syngonium is required once every two years. The plant is not such a fast grower. It is best to repot the Syngonium immediately after purchase. The most suitable period is spring. A plant then has enough energy to repair the damage caused by repotting. When repotting, use fresh potting soil and choose a flower pot that is 20% larger than its previous one.

Air purifying function

The Syngonium can purify the air like no other. Although the plant is not very large, it purifies the air in no time. Always handy, such a plant.

Is the Syngonium toxic?

Unfortunately, the Syngonium is very toxic. The plant is therefore not really suitable for households with children or pets. Did you get the plant anyway, and did you eat the leaves? Then contact a doctor immediately.

Diseases and peculiarities

Syngonium is not susceptible to pests or diseases. Although the plant can of course suffer from it. Is this the case? Then you can use pesticide.
