How do you take care of a Strelitzia?

The best location

The Strelitzia is a large plant and is used to a lot of sunlight in nature. Direct sunlight is therefore well tolerated by the Strelitzia. Place her close to the window. Even in winter she likes to face south to catch as much light as possible. You will soon notice when the plant gets too little sunlight. Flowering will diminish and her leaves will become ugly. In the winter it is best to place the Strelitzia in the bedroom. The heating is not on here. A heater can make for a slightly unhappy houseplant. A colder room will benefit the health of the Strelitzia.

Watering the Strelitzia

In summer it is important to provide the Strelitzia with water every week. The plant grows best with a moist potting soil. After a week it will be dry again in summer, so you can go ahead with the watering can. However, avoid giving too much water. This can cause root rot. In winter, the Strelitzia still needs water once a week. Make sure that the amount is less. In summer you also water once a week. Although the quantities are different. By watering once a week in the winter you stimulate flowering in the spring.

Plant nutrition

From spring onwards, the Strelitzia consumes a lot of nutrients from the earth. Nutrition that the plant needs to grow. After 6 to 8 weeks the nutrients are completely gone. It is therefore important to give the Strelitzia extra nutrients every two weeks. We recommend using plant nutrition from spring to summer. Extra nutrition is not necessary in autumn and winter. This can even be harmful! For the Strelitzia, it is best to choose plant food suitable for flowering houseplants. The correct dosage can be found on the food packaging.

Repotting

Usually the Strelitzia grows out of its flowerpot every 2 years. It is therefore height time to repot. Choose a flowerpot that is at least 20% larger than the previous one. Otherwise you will keep going! We recommend that you plan repotting in the spring. From the spring onwards, the plant will start to grow vigorously again. A larger flowerpot with all that extra space can stimulate even more growth. To keep the soil always moist, you can add hydro grains at the bottom of the flower pot. This is mainly recommended if there is a hole at the bottom of the flowerpot.

Air purifying function

The larger the leaf of a plant, the better the plant can produce oxygen. With its large leaves, the Strelitzia has an enormous advantage. When purifying the air, a plant opens its stomata. This converts CO2 into oxygen. The Strelitzia is not the most air-purifying plant. However, with such a large leaf it makes up for a lot. Another advantage to get the Strelitzia in your house!

Is the Strelitzia poisonous?

Yes, a Strelitzia is slightly poisonous. When a child or pet has taken a bite from the leaf of the Strelitzia it can cause complaints. Think of nausea, spitting and itching. Has your child or pet taken a bite from the Strelitzia? Then contact a doctor to be sure.

Diseases and peculiarities

The Strelitzia is sensitive to scale insects and spider mites. Fortunately, removing the pests is easy because of the hard leaves. Spider mites can be recognized by a small spider web at the tip of the leaf. In order to prevent vermin from entering the Strelitzia, it is best to spray the leaf. Do you discover pests? You can treat it directly with a pesticide.
