Spider plant

The Chlorophytum comosum, or as we also call it the Spider plant, is an easy houseplant. Originally it comes from the tropical rainforests of South Africa. But fortunately we now also know the Spider plant as houseplant and ground cover. A Spider plant can withstand the cold quite well, which makes it easy to put the plant outside in the garden or on the balcony.

How do you take care of the Spider plant?

The best location

A Spider plant likes to stand, hang or lie in a place with lots of light. Although direct sunlight is not a good idea. Then the leaves of the plant can burn! Indirect sunlight, on the other hand, is perfect for the Spider plant. If you have the plant inside as a hanging plant, about 2 meters from a window facing south is perfect.

Watering the Spider plant

Spider plant show well when the watering is not quite to your liking. If you water a Spider plant 2 to 3 times a week in summer, and once a week in winter, there is nothing wrong. If a Spider plant is watered too little, the leaf becomes pale. Almost all color disappears from the leaf of the Spider plant. It is also possible that the leaf turns brown. Then the air in the room is too dry for the Spider plant. It is then advisable to regularly go into the weather with a plant sprayer.

Plant nutrition

In order to keep the leaves of the Spider plant nice and healthy, it is wise to give plant nutrition. From the beginning of spring until the end of August you can administer plant nutrition. A Spider plant needs a dash of plant nutrition once a month. You can read the quantity on the packaging of the plant nutrition. This differs per brand and per type of plant nutrition.

Repotting

It is not necessary to repot a Spider plant every year. Especially when a plant is a little older. However, you can make cuttings of the Spider plant during the year. Taking cuttings from the Spider plant is very easy, and you can do it often. A Spider plant makes new shoots on the conveyor belt. If you are going to repot, spring is the best time to do so. The Spider plant is then full of new energy to be able to repair any damage caused by repotting.

Air purifying function

You might not expect it, but a Spider plant is actually quite air-purifying. This is mainly due to the amount of leaves the plant has. During the day, the plant opens its stomata so that it can convert CO2 into oxygen.

Is the Spider plant poisonous?

Good news! A Spider plant is not poisonous. You can therefore place the plant in a home where you have curious pets walking around.

Diseases and peculiarities

If the air is too dry, a Spider plant can suffer from vermin. Even if you place the plant on a location where there is a lot of draught. In order to prevent diseases and vermin, it is best to spray regularly with a plant sprayer. If the Spider plant does suffer from pests, you can use a pesticide.
