How do you take care of a Schefflera?

The best location

It is best to place the Schefflera in a place where there is about 3 to 5 hours of sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight in all cases. The following rule applies to the Schefflera: “The lighter the leaf, the more sunlight the plant needs”. The darker species can be placed a bit darker than the lighter species.

Watering the Schefflera

The Schefflera is not a large user of water. On the contrary! In summer, the plant likes to stand in slightly moist soil, and in winter, the soil is allowed to dry out between watering sessions. Water the Schefflera once a week in summer. In winter, you can scale up the watering to once every 10 days. The amount of water depends on several factors. Think about the size and type of flowerpot, the size of the plant and the amount of light. Although of course there are more factors that are important for the amount of water. Check the soil regularly with your finger. Is it almost dry after just 2 days? Then you can give it more water. If the soil is still very wet after a week, it is better to use less water.

Plant nutrition

From spring until the end of summer it is best to feed the Schefflera with extra plant food. After 6 to 8 weeks the plant has taken its energy from the soil. We therefore recommend extra plant nutrition once every two months. You can use plant nutrition especially for houseplants. It is best to check the amount of nutrition on the leaflet.

Repotting

Immediately after purchase it is best to repot the Schefflera. After you have repotted the houseplant it will only be needed again after 3 years. The Schefflera is not such a fast grower! Root growth is very slow, and the plant needs very little living space. Saves you another afternoon with potting soil, pots and the broom.

Air purifying function

The Schefflera is certainly an air-purifying plant. May also with so many leaves! Without you noticing it, the houseplant opens its stomata during the day. With these stomata, the plant absorbs CO2 and releases oxygen. Handy!

Is the Schefflera poisonous?

The juice of the Schefflera is slightly poisonous. As soon as pets or people come into contact with the juice, irritations can occur. We therefore advise you not to take the Schefflera in your house as soon as you have pets. In case you have eaten from the Schefflera it is wise to contact a doctor. In the meantime, keep a close eye on the symptoms.

Diseases and peculiarities

It is important not to endanger the Schefflera. Are you? Then the Schefflera could suffer from mealy bugs. You can fight mealybugs by spraying a hard jet of water on the leaf. Doesn’t this work? Then you can use chemical pesticides. Although, of course, prevention is better than cure. So no pitch with draughts!
