Polyscias

Polyscias

Most people know the Aralia plant, only under the name Polysicas. The name Polysicas is Greek for a lot of shade. This mainly means that the plant offers a lot of shade. The Aralia comes from the Araliaceae family together with Hedera and Fatsia. Originally the plant is found in Africa and Asia. You can recognize it by its green or round purple leaves. In addition, the plant has sturdy branches. This makes the houseplant look more like a small tree.

How do you take care of a Polyscias?

The best location

The Polyscias like to stand in a sunny spot. Preferably up to a maximum of 4 hours of sunlight. Do not choose a spot with direct sunlight! It is therefore best to place the Polyscias in indirect sunlight. This can be directly near a window on the north, but certainly not directly to a window on the south. When the Polyscias gets too little light, the leaves may fall out and the growth may stagnate. If you buy a Polyscias it is best not to place it directly in a sunny spot. The plant is grown in a greenhouse where filtered light comes in. It is therefore best to let the Polyscias get used to sunlight for a while. Always a little closer to its spot.

Watering the Polyscias

The Polyscias prefer a moist soil during the warm months. Once a week a sip, that’s enough. As long as the potting soil remains slightly moist at all times! In the warmer months, that means from spring to summer. After the summer you can give the plant less water. It is fine to leave the potting soil dry for a few days in winter. The plant uses less energy from autumn onwards, which means that it also needs less water. Do you water the plant too much in the winter? Then all that excess water cannot be absorbed. This water attracts to the roots, which can cause root rot.

Plant nutrition

It’s best to feed the Polyscias a little from spring onwards. Once every two weeks is enough. We recommend not feeding them until after the summer. From autumn onwards, the Polyscias consume less nutrients. The plant food you can use with the Polyscias is the plant food for green houseplants. Never give more plant food than the recommended amount.

Repotting

It’s best to pot every two years. In addition, repotting is always a good idea. Just like when the flowerpot becomes too small. Repotting is preferable in the spring. When repotting it is best to use a pot that is at least 20% larger than the previous one. When repotting, use Universal potting soil, and leave the hydro grains in the pot. The Polyscias is not a fan of hydro grains.

Air purifying function

Like most plants, the Polyscias C02 converts into oxygen. This creates a cleaner space or office. A number of plants can also remove harmful substances and foul odours from the air. This only does not apply to the Polyscias! They are not such a boulder in cleaning the air. But that doesn’t matter, because with the amount of leaves it can purify the air.

Is the Polyscias poisonous?

The Polyscias is not poisonous. Good news, then! If a pet has eaten the leaves of the plant, you’d better contact the vet. Despite the fact that the Polyscias is not poisonous, it is better to be safe than sorry. It is also important to pay attention in case of strange symptoms.

Diseases and peculiarities

Unfortunately, the Polyscias are naturally somewhat susceptible to diseases and vermin. The plant finds a high humidity ideal, which is not always achievable in a living room. If the humidity is too low, the plant can suffer from spider mites and aphids. Spider mites can easily be removed with a powerful jet of water. Lice can be removed with a pesticide.
