Pachira

Pachira

From the swamps of Eastern Brazil, Panama and Costa Rica there is the Pachira. You can know it as a money tree, water cocoa and or just the Pachira. The Pachira Aquatica has many nicknames, but Money Tree is perhaps the most widely used. In Asia, for example, the plant is a popular gift for a housewarming or birthday. They believe in Asia that the leaf can catch money. Worth a try, right?

How do you take care of a Pachira?

The best location

You’d better not put the Pachira in direct sunlight. The plant doesn’t do so well there. Indirect sunlight, on the other hand, is suitable. It is best to place the Pachira in front of a window facing north. Or 2 to 3 metres from a window on the northeast. Do you place the plant in one of these places? Then the Pachira will get between 3 and 5 hours of sunlight. Exactly enough. As soon as the leaves turn yellow, the plant gets too much light. As soon as the Pachira grows very fast, but without making new leaves, the plant will be too dark.

Watering the Pachira

The Pachira likes to make it easy for you. In terms of care, the plant differs from other houseplants. Once every 3 weeks, the Pachira needs a big splash of water. Make sure that the soil has dried up before you water it again. The plant stores water in its trunk. And as soon as too much water is given, the Pachira will suffer from root rot. In the summer you can bring the watering forward. Once every 1.5 to 2 weeks is sufficient. That way the soil is still slightly moist before it has dried out completely.

Plant nutrition

From spring until the end of summer you can feed the Pachira with Universal plant food. We advise not to feed the Pachira more than 1x per month extra plant food. It is best to check how much plant food you can give the Pachira on the packaging.

Repotting

A Pachira that is smaller than 120 cm is best repotted every year. We certainly recommend repotting immediately after purchase. An older Pachira that has reached 120 cm does not need to be repotted every year. With a larger Pachira it is best to repot once every 2 to 3 years. However, the Pachira does like to get a new top layer of soil. This gives the plant enough energy.

Air purifying function

We cannot call it the most air-purifying plant, but the Pachira is certainly air-purifying. The plant owes this function mainly to its large and full leaves.

Is the Pachira poisonous?

For pets and humans, the Pachira is slightly toxic. Although in some countries the leaf is eaten after it has been cooked. We do not recommend trying this. Has your pet eaten the leaves of the Pachira? Then contact a doctor and keep an eye on strange behaviour.

Diseases and peculiarities

A Pachira can suffer from pests during draughts and drought. You can spray the plant preventively to prevent vermin and pests. If the plant does suffer from pests, you can use a pesticide.
