Ficus

Ficus

Ficus is one of the most popular houseplants there is. Various species can be found in our living rooms and offices. There are no less than 800 species of Ficus to be found! The most famous species are the Ficus Lyrata, Ficus Elastica Belize and the Ficus Microcarpa. In nature, Ficus can be found in almost all 'warmer' continents. From Africa, South America to Australia and Asia. Unfortunately not in the Netherlands, but with a greenhouse we can get very far.

How do you take care of a Ficus?

The best location

In nature, Ficus grows in warmer areas. Here the sun grows more than half of the year. The plant is therefore certainly used to some sunlight. No direct sunlight, but still! The biggest difference between a plant in nature and a plant in the living room? In nature, Ficus gets a sun with much stronger power. In your living room Ficus can therefore just stand in direct sunlight. Just cozy next to the window so. That’s no problem for this houseplant!

Watering the Ficus

Always keep the soil of Ficus slightly moist. It is best to give it small amounts of water at a time. The correct test for Ficus is as follows. Is the soil dry after 2 days? Then give a little more water. Is the soil still wet after 6 days? Then give less water, and beware of root rot. It is best to water once a week in the summer. In very warmer periods this can even be twice a week. Of course, you can water less in the winter. Ficus uses much less energy during this period. And so also much less water.

Plant nutrition

In the summer it is best to give Ficus extra plant nutrition. We recommend adding this to the watering once every two weeks. Ficus needs extra plant nutrition to become stronger and keep up with its growth. From spring until after the summer Ficus grows so fast that there is not enough nutrition in the soil. Plant nutrition can therefore be the right addition.

Repotting

It’s best to repot Ficus every two years. And when the plant grows out of its flowerpot of course! When repotting, spring is preferable. This is because Ficus will grow again from spring onwards. When repotting, choose a flowerpot that is at least 20% larger than its previous one. It is not necessary to repot Ficus every year. The roots of the Ficus do not grow big enough.

Air purifying function

Ficus doesn’t just look beautiful. It is also easy to maintain and air-purifying. Ficus is even on the list of the ten most air-purifying plants in the world. And this list doesn’t come from just anyone. No! This list comes from a NASA study. And they really aren’t just any researchers. No, they know what they’re talking about. And so Ficus is just an air-purifying plant!

Is Ficus poisonous?

Unfortunately for your pets, Ficus is poisonous. The juice of Ficus can cause irritation to cats, dogs and humans. You get this irritation as soon as the skin comes into contact with the juice. Ficus can also be very dangerous for children. At least if sap is released by the plant, this is usually after pruning and cutting. Ficus is also a very fine plant.

Diseases and peculiarities

A Ficus is very susceptible to diseases and pests. Is it sticky around the flowerpot of Ficus? Maybe the aphid is active. An aphid gives off a sticky substance, which you can easily recognize it from. Make sure you keep a close eye on Ficus leaves. The sooner you encounter vermin, the better.
