Clusia

Clusia

In the Caribbean, where the Clusia comes from naturally, they treat the Clusia like weeds. Why is this? The plant grows on different substrates. From tropical forests, swamps to lava landscapes. The Clusia doesn't really matter. The Clusia is therefore an easy houseplant. You recognize her by the deep green color and firm leaves. Oh yes, the plant is also extremely air-purifying.

How do you take care of a Clusia?

The best location

It is best to place the Clusia on or next to the windowsill, where the plant gets direct sunlight. It’s important that this isn’t a south-facing window. The sunlight from the south is a bit too strong for the Clusia. As soon as the Clusia gets too much light, the leaf turns brown or can get yellow spots. As soon as spring comes there will be a lot of extra leaves. Isn’t this the case? Then the plant is in too dark a position.

Watering the Clusia

Water the Clusia once a week, except in winter. When autumn comes, you can scale up the watering to once every 10 days. Then you let the earth dry out slightly. The handy thing about the Clusia is once a week a sip of water too much or too little does not matter. You’re welcome to forget the plant for once. No problem!

Plant nutrition

To make the Clusia extra happy you can feed it once every two weeks from spring onwards. You can just give the extra food during the watering. Saves you extra work! We recommend supplementing the Clusia with Universal plant food. As far as quantity is concerned, it is best to consult the packaging. In any case, do not give too much plant food. Even after the summer we do not recommend plant food.

Repotting

The roots of the Clusia do not grow extremely hard. Repotting every year is therefore not a requirement. Although we do recommend repotting the plant with fresh soil once every two years. And when the plant grows out of its pot, of course. It is best to repot the Clusia immediately after purchase. Then it won’t bother you for two years.

Air purifying function

Although most Clusia species are small plants, the species is very air-purifying. The firm leaf opens its stomata during the day and purifies the air like a mold. The Clusia also removes harmful substances from the air. Ideal, right?

Is the Clusia poisonous?

Unfortunately, the Clusia is poisonous. Both the fruit and the juice of the plant can cause damage to pets and people. As soon as the juice has come into contact with the skin and eyes it is wise to call in a doctor. Even if the leaf has been eaten, you should inform a doctor.

Diseases and peculiarities

Good news! The Clusia does not easily suffer from vermin. On the contrary. Should the plant still suffer from pests, we recommend that it be vigorously controlled. You can use biological pest control or chemical pesticides for this. Consult the packaging for the correct quantity.
