How to propagate: Devil's Ivy - Pothos (Epipremnum - Scindapsus)

The Devil's Ivy, or Scindapsus, is a plant that can have several colours, different shapes and sizes. You probably know the plant as a hanging plant, although you can also place the plant in a ‘normal’ flowerpot.

Scindapsus plants make aerial roots on the opposite of each leaf. You can easily recognize aerial roots. Often an aerial root starts as a small brown lump and grows into a real stem.

Propagating a Epipremnum and Scindapsus in 4 steps

Step 1: Disinfect

First clean the scissors you might be using.

Keep the scissors under hot water and clean them well. This prevents you from unnecessarily transferring bacteria during the propagation.

Do you happen to have disinfectant or pure alcohol? Disinfect the tools after using hot water. Let's get away with those bacteria and fungi!

Step 2: Take cuttings

Since the plant grows aerial roots, propagating is very easy. Cut a stem just behind the leaves. Make sure the cutting has at least 3 leaves.

Step 3: Propagating in water

The Epipremnum and Scindapsus can be propagated in water and in soil. Although we prefer the propagating method with water. Watching the roots of the cutting grow is very special to see.

If you want to propagate an Epipremnum and Scindapsus in water, make sure to remove the bottom leaf of the cutting. Then put the cutting in water or in soil.

Step 4: Taking care of the cutting

As soon as the roots are around 10 cm you can move the cutting to a decorative pot and soil.

Water regularly in the first period, but not every week. The transition from water to soil can be quite a shock for the cuttings.

Tip: for a full Epipremnum and Scindapsus plant it is best to cut multiple stems. Only one new stem grows out of a cutting. With multiple cuttings you get more, which makes for a full plant.
