How to propagate: Cactus

Just like the care of a cactus, the propagation of it is easy. Especially when small bumps grow on the outside of the plant. Although a propagation of a cactus that grows lengthwise is not difficult either.

Pay attention! The propagation of a Cactus is not guaranteed to be successful. It happens more often that a cutting does not grow roots.

Propagating a Cactus in 3 steps

Step 1: Disinfect

First clean the knife you might be using.

Keep the knife under hot water and clean them well. This prevents you from unnecessarily transferring bacteria during the propagation.

Do you happen to have disinfectant or pure alcohol? Disinfect the tools after using hot water. Let's get away with those bacteria and fungi!

Step 2: Take cuttings

Do you have a cactus that grows bumps? Then you can carefully cut these bumps off.

Does your cactus grow lengthwise? Then you can cut off the stem close to the ground.

In both cases, let the wound of the cutting dry well for at least a week.

Step 3: Taking care of the cutting

As soon as the cuttings have dried out they can be placed into soil. Use a mix of potting soil and sand. You can put the bump on top of the soil, or put the cuttings in the soil.

Make sure that the cutting gets enough indirect sunlight. It's important that you don't water the cutting. Only water the cutting when there is growth visible.

Tip: Does the cactus suffer from root rot, or do you see rot on its stem? Then it is best to cut around the rot. Do you accidentally touch some rot? Clean the knife thoroughly. If you don't, you may spread the rot.
